Sisters, Knitters, Sweater Recyclers

WIP Wednesday

Karen has been seeing a few knitting blogs lately doing WIP Wednesdays so we decided to also give it a try.

I have been working on the My Little Companion bag since Saturday. The pattern and the yarn was a Christmas gift from Karen last year. I am using the Lion Brand Wool in Ocean Blues. The colours are just awesome. This is my second try at a felting project. Last fall I made a Booga Bag. While I was happy with the outcome of my Booga, I kinda wish I would have not felted it quite as much as I did. It was smaller then I had wanted but live and learn. I really don’t have too much left to knit and I am hoping to do the felting this weekend when Karen comes over to knit.

I have really been into dishcloths lately. These are two I have done since New Year’s. The one on the left is Sugar n Cream in the Buttercream colourway and the one on the right is the Sugar n Cream Striping yarn in Tie Dye Stripes. The pattern is just the one found on the ball band but this is the first time I have tried it.

I  also knitted a pair of the Pocket Book Slippers for my daughter, Kaity. These are done in Mission Falls, 100% Superwash Merino. I absolutely love this yarn!! The slippers feel fantastic on your cold feet!!!

For some non knitting news….I am trying to potty train my younger son, Ryan. So far, NO good!!! lol….He has a little game where he takes off his Pull Up, sits a good 5 seconds on the potty and then wants the Pull Up back on. Then he continues the same thing over and over like hmmmmmmmmmm…….500 times!!!! Oh, good times, good times!!!

Anyways, enjoy the rest of the week everyone!!

Bad Bloggers, Bad Froggers

Not only have we been bad bloggers we have also been bad froggers. Bad sweater recyclers that is. For the last couple of years we have ripped/frogged sweaters and sold the yarn on Ebay. The money from these sales we use for girls knitting weekends away. But the frogging has been as sadly neglected as the blogging. And there is a weekend we were hoping to go oncoming up soon. We had better start frogging or else start saving if we are going to be able to go away.

Before Christmas we picked up 3 sweaters to recycle the yarn from. Here they are prior to washing.

Of the 3 my favorite was the top one – it had a fabulous feel, and looked like it would rip well. The white one also showed promise, but the beige one I’m not so sure about. It is has a large halo and I am worried it will not rip well, but if it doesn’t I will felt it and use it for something else. Well, I have washed them and started on the ripping. One of the most important things we look at when we look for sweaters is the label. We are looking for 100% natural fibers – preferably luxury fibers such as cashmere, silk, blends of the same. (All three of the above sweaters are 100% cashmere) .

After looking at the labels a little more carefully I noticed that the white sweater had a designer label (DKNY), so I decided to start with that sweater. The reason for this is that I thought that it being a designer sweater the cashmere may be of a slightly higher quality then the others. The yarn certainly has a nice feel, and is slightly thicker then what we would normally find. Right now I am in the ripping/frogging stage but I will show you some progress pictures as I continue. I’m not certain what I will do with the yarn – sell it or use it. I have wanted to make “My So Called Scarf” – perhaps it would be nice out of this yarn. Shh! don’t tell Kim and Kris – they’ll vote for selling it.

I don’t feel confident enough to provide a tutorial on frogging/ripping, and besidesthere are already several great tutorials out there., so try here (this is the site we used to learn). If you have any questions though please feel free to ask and I’m sure one of us can help you.

Okay I guess that is a little long winded – I will let it go for now – but I’ll keep you informed on the future of this yarn.

Test Knitting

Hello I’m still here but I have been very busy knitting. I survived the holidays and did do a bit of Xmas gift knitting. A scarf and 3 pairs of mittens. Not a lot, but for me to finish 4 things, that really is something.

And now onto more exciting news. I have been test knitting. I was lucky enough to be able to test knit for Anny Purls . She has designed a beautiful little sweater call “Hickory Dickory Dot”. She will have this pattern for sale on her design blog sometime in the future. Keep an eye out for it here.

Anny gave me permission to post a picture of the finished sweater here on the blog so here it is.

This was actually my first test knitting and I enjoyed it very much. The sweater is very adorable. The pattern was very well detailed and easy to knit. I love it. I can see myself knitting more of these in the future.

Anyways just wanted to post a little update and I hopefully will be able to post a little bit more now that my life has quieted down a little bit.

It’s all Over!!!

I always find it a little depressing when the holidays are over – all the anticipation and planning. But a little part of me is always anxious for life to get back to normal too!! Bring on School!!!

It has been a least two months since I posted. Awful, I know. But, now life should be getting back to the routine so I am dedicated to blogging more!

My last post was way back in October. Not long after that my youngest son tripped over one of his toys and broke his little foot. Poor little guy. He crawled around for about a week and then there was no stopping him with his cast. It had to stay on for about four weeks but now he is a good as new. Here he is following doctors orders – staying off it and keeping it elevated!!

During the past two months or so I have also been knitting of course.

I made these slippers that both my son and daughter love. They are called Pocketbook Slippers and you can find the pattern here. These are made out of Patons Decor. Kim made some out of Mission Falls and they turned out beautiful. I actually loved them alot more out of that yarn so I went to our LYS, that is clearing out all there yarn, and got myself some Mission Falls. I got some in a gorgeous coral that my daughter wants her slippers knit from.

My biggest project of the holiday season had to be these!!!

dsc02894.jpg dsc02895.jpg

They are the Buddy Bag by Anny Purls but I did not include the little pocket like she did. I knitted these two for a friend’s grandchildren. They are made out of Bernat Satin. Karen was wonderful and did all the seaming and lining of the bags for me. Thanks Kek!!!! I put a little holiday book and some goodies in each and am really happy at how they turned out.

I have now actually FOUR of these – with one more to be lined. I think they are so cute and there is nothing more adorable than a little one walking around with one of these on their backs.

I have also made a bunch of Christmas dishclothes for my son’s teachers but forgot to take a picture before I sent them off to school. Story of my life!!!

Right now I am currently in a dishcloth mood and I have made quite a few in the past week or so. I am also working on a square for my Lizard Ridge. Pictures to follow.

My sisters and I are counting down the days until the yarn store in Windsor opens up again. The owner of the store is off to a trade show until Jan. 16 and the three of us have each received a couple of gift certificates to her store. Picture three adult women with their noses pressed up against her window…..lol!!! OPEN OPEN OPEN!!!

Well, that is all for now. I really hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!!!!!! We sure did!

Oh yeah, and…….

Happy New Year to you all!!!!! May 2008 bring wonderful things to us all!!!

Kris :-))

Getting Ahead of Myself

A couple of weeks ago I had my sister Kim over for dinner.¬† After dinner we were knitting, or should I say trying to knit.¬† Kim had brought her bulldog, Dory – who thought that she needed to sit on the loveseat between us as we knit.¬† Well there was just enough room there for me and Kim, and Dory certainly made things tight.¬† And then Kim kept complaining that it was too hot to knit (did it occur to her that maybe it was the chunky bulldog wedged between us that was making her hot).¬† Anyways, the point of all this is that right about the time that Kim was doing the most whining about the heat, her granddaughter came downstairs dressed in my daughter’s boots and coat.¬† It couldn’t have been that hot¬†could it¬† if Havana was dressed like an Eskimo?

I have been very busy knitting.¬† The only problem is I am not knitting on one thing, getting it finished and loving it.¬† Instead I am starting multiple things, and working a little bit here and there.¬† And I do mean multiple things – I think I started about 6 things in the last week alone.¬† At least none of these are Christmas gifts.¬† No holiday knitting for me – I know better – I would only end up Xmas Eve trying to buy something because my knitting wasn’t finished.

¬†I’m not sure what the cure for this would be.¬† My daughter (who is patiently waiting for a second mitten to her set) suggested that I stop looking at the internet.¬† I have to agree with her – that would certainly help – that is one of my main downfalls (eg. Ravelry).¬† The other thing I think that would help is if I stop buying knitting magazines.¬† Will I do either of these things?¬† Nope, I will continue on starting many things and hopefully finishing at least a few.

Here’s my most recent started project.¬† It is a little sweater for my friend’s granddaughter.¬† At first I didn’t like the colours (especially the green)¬† but the further I got the more they grew on me.¬† I am doing my own thing here and not following a pattern (something I never do), but hopefully I will finish it before something else catches my eye.

And I will you leave with an FO.¬† I made my husband a pair of clogs for our anniversary.¬† I had made him another pair 2 years ago and he loved them.¬† He has been wearing them with the heels worn out and it was time for another pair.¬† I have made many pairs of these clogs.¬† The pattern is fairly fast and easy (it does involve a lot of pattern reading, for me at least).¬† For some reason though I hate making clogs.¬† I’m not sure why, could be because every pair I have made I have made a stupid mistake and extended the time and effort to make them considerably.¬† I want a pair of these and hopefully in the near future will get the gumption to make myself a pair.

Bye for now.

I’m A Knitting Fool!

I’ve gotten so much knitting done lately, i’m in awe of myself! lol….My last post I showed everyone the sweater that I was making for myself – my first ‘me’ project!….it’s coming along great!…take a look for yourself..

from this…

to this!..

I’m flying through this sweater!….it’s helping the cause that i’m bringing this to work and getting a few rows done there….I know i’ve already said it, but I LOVE knitting from the top down….hopefully by the end of the week I will be able to post it all finished!…I’m knitting this up using my Knit Pick option set…but the actual needles i’m using is their new Harmony line, which is the wood needles…these are such nice needles – nice pointed ends, light in weight and in awesome colours!

Next up for me…..is this…

Pattern: Junior Knits by Debbie Bliss
Yarn: I think i’m going to follow the pattern and use the DB Cashmerino (nothing but the best for my granddaughter!)

My granddaughter is starting figure skating after Xmas so I thought this would be a good garment to wear on the ice…less constricting then a full sweater?? ….This book came to be from Kris over at Web-goddess – she had my name for the last round of Secret Pal – I don’t think she will ever know how much I love this book!…and she made me a pair of socks which I love!..

One last thing…Jane over at Grammieknits is having a contest, check it out…I won one of her contests before and she has won our’s…so let’s hope the good luck keeps flowing lol!!..Also, Vicki over at Purple Fruit is having a contest as well so check her out!
have a great day!

5 Excuses Why I Suck at Blogging Lately

Well now that my sister Kim has made her¬† reappearance I guess that I should step up to the plate.¬† I thought that I would make a quick entry of the reasons excuses why I haven’t been blogging lately.

  1. RAVELY – need I say more?
  2. I don’t really like to talk about¬†objects that are in progress – instead I would rather post about finished objects – so of course this rarely happens because I¬†seem to rarely finished anything (but stay tuned I think that that is changing.)
  3. I don’t like to post without a picture and my camera and I are on the outs – we plan on a mediation session in the near future – so there is hope.
  4. Grade 5 homework is kicking my a**.¬† I just don’t understand how she comes home with homework that she doesn’t know how to do – it’s homework – doesn’t that mean it should just be finishing up what she learned in class – not learning it at home?¬† Needless to say our¬† homework sessions are long and often end up in a fight that leaves us both with bad feelings.
  5. And last –¬†no time on the computer at home – it’s bad enough with my son and daughter fighting for the computer¬†all the time.¬† Of course it would help if my¬†boss wasn’t so against¬†my¬†blogging at work – go figure!

Anyways that’s it for now but hopefully more to¬†follow.

I’m Here!!!

Alrighty, first thing first…my apologies to my sister Kristeen for not blogging regularly, or for that matter AT ALL!! lol….I HAVE been busy but yes I guess not too busy to write a few lines etc…I solemnly vow to be a better blogger…

whew, that’s over…now onto better things…

Yes! I have been knitting….I have developed a love for knitting from the top down…I have decided this is the only way for me to knit a sweater…I love completing the whole sweater at once…my first top down sweater was Tasia’s Cardigan for my granddaughter Havana..

for the buttons I chose the cutest little lady bugs!..itwas a really good, quick project…I’m definitely going to make this sweater again for her, using different yarn though, something a bit thinnner so she can wear it inside…For the above sweater I used Bernat’s denim – There was a yarn store up near where my sister’s and I went on vacation – the store was closing and I got this yarn at 50% off!…It’s a really nice yarn and I would definitely keep it in mind for future projects. She really loved as I’m sure you can tell by the pictures…!

My next project is this one…

I’ve already started it…I’m knitting this up with Elann’s Peruvian Sierra Aran – 80% Highland Wool & 20% Alpaca in the Chestnut colourway!…I’m about half way down the chest – I’ll post some pics of my progress in the next day or two (I promise Kris!)….It’s a great project and i’m flying through it!…

I WILL be back!

Knitting Along

I really don’t have much to write about, I’m afraid. I have not really been doing much knitting, only a little here and there. I am still a little nervous to start sewing my Cotton Ease sweater together. I think it’s because I am so proud I actually knitted the whole thing and I am scared that I will mess up the seaming and will just be disappointed with how it looks so I’ll just stuff it away somewhere and forget about it. Does that sound weird??!

What I have been knitting is Lizard Ridge squares. I am really enjoying this project. Well, so far I am. I only have 2 and a half squares done….lol. Renee finally revealed her finished afghan and let me just say it’s gorgeous. I can’t wait till I can actually post some pictures of mine finished. Don’t hold your breathe though. That will likely be somewhere in the middle of 2008…..if I’m lucky! lol

That’s all for now. I am helping my daughter with her very first essay and she has snuck off somewhere. We were working and when I turned around she was gone. So I guess it’s time to go and remind her that I already passed grade 6……maybe that will get her moving. Yeah, probably not! lol

I will post a picture of my unfinished sweater next time. That might just be the kick I need to just do it!

Have a great day!!
